Meat bone meal (MBM) is made from waste from the slaughterhouse. Meat bone meal is used to produce both fish and poultry feed because it has a crude protein content of above 50%. MBM was previously employed in the mixed manufacturing of ruminant feed, but it was prohibited after the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic because the flour served as a vehicle for the spread of the illness.
