How to Create Small Succulent Plant

Miniature succulent plants are highly desirable. To create them, paclobutrazol can be used. This compound is a retardant or inhibitor that suppresses the growth point, halting cell division.

The growth regulator is administered by dissolving it first and then using a pipette to drip the liquid solution onto the plant growing point. Routine administration once daily can impede the biosynthesis of the gibberellin hormone, which promotes the growth and development of plant cells.

Consequently, leaves attain stunted growth. Paclobutrazol is an organic fungicide and plant growth regulator compound that inhibits the biosynthesis of the aforementioned hormone, thereby dampening plant stem and leaf growth. Paclobutrazol reduces vegetative growth and promotes generative growth, including flowering and fruiting, while also enhancing plant resistance to various stresses, including drought, low temperatures, and pest and disease attacks.

Paclobutrazol, a member of the triazole chemical class containing a five-atom ring with three nitrogen atoms, features a cyclic structure. Its synthesis can be traced to the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) group’s efforts at Jealott’s Hill. Paclobutrazol has a melting point and boiling point of 165-166°C and 460.9°C, respectively, and solubility in water of up to 22.9 mg/L at 20°C.

Paclobutrazol applies to a variety of plants, including ornamental and fruit plants. This substance can be administered through spraying, watering, or dye application. The amount of paclobutrazol dosage required depends on the type, age, and condition of the plant. Administrators must exercise caution while using paclobutrazol since excessive or frequent application can adversely affect plant growth permanently or leave harmful residues detrimental to human health and the environment.

Another factor in the production of mini succulent plants is the use of calcium carbide. This substance can hinder plant growth by causing the stiffening of plant cell walls, making it problematic for the cells to divide. However, carbide only temporarily causes leaves to grow abnormally. Once the treatment is discontinued, plant growth returns to normal.

Carbide is a gray-black chemical compound comprising solid crystals. It is utilized in producing acetylene gas, which acts as a fuel for carbide or gas welding.

To manufacture carbide, calcium oxide (lime) is reacted with coke (coal) in an electric furnace at elevated temperatures, leading to the production of carbide and carbon monoxide. As carbide reacts with water or moisture, it can release flammable and toxic acetylene gas. Therefore, it should be stored cautiously.
