Greenhouse Chrysanthemum Plants Use of Lights

Chrysanthemum sp is a highly valued horticultural commodity renowned for producing ornamental plants and cut flowers. With their attractive multi-colored flowers, chrysanthemum plants are suitable for enhancing the aesthetic appeal of office spaces, hotels, and restaurants. Additionally, their utilization as cut flowers for decorative and floral arrangements is in great demand, particularly at events such as weddings.

Chrysanthemum plants offer advantages, specifically in terms of longevity and ease of assembly. The introduction of lighting during the cultivation of chrysanthemums has demonstrated its ability to promote plant growth. Chrysanthemum plants require prolonged exposure to sunlight to stimulate flowering and therefore, supplementary lighting sources such as luminescent tubes and incandescent lamps are necessary.

Optimal results can be achieved by providing additional irradiation between 10:30 PM and 1:00 AM with a 150-watt lamp. The lamp’s power, as determined by research, effectively stimulates a flowering area of approximately 9 square meters. Supplementary irradiation is carried out for the vegetative phase, typically lasting 4-8 weeks, to encourage flower formation.

Chrysanthemum Cultivation in the Greenhouse

  1. Select the appropriate chrysanthemum type and variety that meets your purpose and regional conditions. Currently, both local and introduced chrysanthemums are available. Mini chrysanthemums are ideal for potted flowers while large chrysanthemums work best for cut flowers.
  2. Additionally, choose the appropriate greenhouse type that is suitable for your needs. There are different types of greenhouses for cultivating chrysanthemums, including arch, tunnel, sawtooth, and flat greenhouses. Find out which type is best suited for your local conditions. The height of the greenhouse is a factor that affects the microclimate inside. Arch-shaped greenhouses with a height of 2.5 meters can yield higher quality chrysanthemums than those with a height of 3.0 or 3.5 meters.
  3. Performing routine plant maintenance, including watering, fertilizing, weeding, pruning, pest and disease control, and flower thinning, is crucial for optimizing the health and productivity of chrysanthemum plants.
