How to Maintain Longan Tree Production

longan cultivation

Longan trees require special handling after harvest to maintain or increase productivity. To achieve this, prune branches and twigs to keep the plant short and promote compact branching. Additionally, apply 5-6 kg of cow or goat manure to each tree to accelerate the growth of new branches and twigs.

After 2 months, apply NPK 15:15:15 compound fertilizer at a dose of 0.5 kg per tree. The second fertilization should be carried out 1.5 months after the first one using NPK compound fertilizer with a higher ratio of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) than nitrogen (N) at a rate of 0.5 kg per tree.

To stimulate the generative or fruiting phase, apply 250-300 grams of potassium chlorate per tree. Dissolve the potassium chlorate in 3-4 liters of water and sprinkle it around the crown. After a month, new shoots and flower buds will usually appear. If there is a large number of flowers, apply manure every month for 3-4 months at a dose of 2-3 kg per plant.

When the fruits reach half-marble size, apply NPK compound fertilizer with higher levels of nitrogen than phosphorus and potassium. Alternatively, use urea fertilizer. Then, immediately prune by reducing 30-40% of the fruit clusters to maximize and uniformize fruit production. To prevent the fruit from falling off easily, apply NPK compound fertilizer with higher levels of potassium than nitrogen and phosphorus.
