There are three ways to choose a songbird feeder: patience, paying attention to the bird’s physique and behavior, and listening to its song. Currently, there are seven types of songbirds favored by hobbyists, such as Anis Merah, Muraibatu, Branjangan, Lovebird, Prenjak, Kacer, and Cucakrawa.

To obtain quality songbird feeders, it is recommended to purchase birds from breeders with champion breeds or rings, although such breeders may charge higher prices for their birds. If you are on a tight budget, an alternative option is to purchase from bird traders.

When selecting bird feeders, it is important to assess the physical condition of the bird since bird feeders are not yet capable of singing. Physical appearance is also an indicator of the bird’s health. Healthy birds have shiny feathers, bright and clean eyes, and agile and swift movements.

Additionally, the bird should have a sturdy body and no visible ribs. Check the feathers around the bird’s anal opening for signs of dirt, which may indicate digestive issues.

To check the health of a bird, examine the feathers on the underside and blow on the breast feathers while holding the bird with its head up. A protruding breastbone indicates that the bird is thin, while reddish skin color is a sign of sickness. If the plumage appears stretched out, united, and untidy, it may be a sign that the bird is sick and may die. It is recommended not to purchase such a bird.

Observe the bird’s movements to determine its health. A bird that is actively moving is a sign of good health. Avoid selecting a bird that is just perching and closing its eyes. Additionally, pay attention to the bird’s feet and avoid selecting a bird with injured toes or nails. These types of wounds typically occur at the base of the nail, between the finger and the nail bed. They can be challenging to heal, particularly if the nail is broken, detached, or bleeding.
