Keeping Koi in an Aquarium: How to Do It

It is possible to keep koi in an aquarium, but it is not commonly done. A 20 square meters koi aquarium will need 2 cm thick glass. The disadvantage of a koi aquarium is that its bottom cannot be made concave like the bottom of a koi pond, which makes it easier to remove food scraps and waste. Consequently, the aquarium should therefore be flushed frequently.

Observe the filtering system as well. The standard filter capacity of a koi pond is at least 30% of the pond volume. It is therefore necessary to build a chamber with a position behind the aquarium for the biological filter.

At least four chambers of 60 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm are required for a 20 square meters aquarium. The bottom of the first chamber is lined with 70% bioball and then covered with 30% coral. The next 2 chambers are bottomed with 70% bioball and 30% zeolite. The fourth tub is used as a reservoir for the water that is pumped into the aquarium.

To maintain the dissolved oxygen levels in the aquarium, the water enters the tank like running water. Remember that it is difficult for Koi to grow to their full potential in an aquarium. It takes 2.5-3 years to grow from a size of 20 cm to a body length of 40 cm.

To maintain the water quality of the aquarium, remember to clean the filter once a month. Install an ultraviolet (UV) lamp instead of sunlight to maintain the brightness of the koi’s colors.
